What’s in my bag as a freelancer – with the STM Grace range

When you work in an office, it’s easy to take for granted how convenient everything is. Computer? Check. Stationary? Check. But as a freelancer, generally you are your own office, which means you’ve got to provide all your kit for yourself. I seldom took more than a notebook and pen to uni, so getting used to carrying a laptop and other essentials with me (as well as tying it into my outfits!) did take a bit of getting used to.

I was sent the Grace Deluxe Sleeve by STM to review, and I thought this would be a great opportunity to show you what kit I find essential in my day to day life as a freelancer. Whether you’re off to work from a coffee shop, or have a busy day of meetings with a new client you want to impress, here’s the items I think you definitely need in your life.

Macbook Pro
Surely my number one essential is my Macbook. Mine has been going strong for five and a half years now and I couldn’t imagine going back to a Windows laptop. However, I do find my Pro very heavy, and when I come to replace it (hopefully that won’t be anytime soon #Pray4Alice) I’d probably go for an Air. I’m impressed with the strong straps on the Grace Deluxe Sleeve bag. I’ve had other bags’ handles snap off on my before, which is not the dream. The Grace Deluxe sleeve snuggly fits my 13″ Macbook, and the soft lining helps to protect it as I run on and off trams all day!

A compact diary
This year I have several diaries and planners helping to keep me organised, but my most important one is my A6 size 2018 daily diary. Whether I’m planning deadlines or making a note of meetings I have that month, I always need a diary with me for work, but as I try to carry as little as possible with me a compact planner is essential. I picked up this blue and gold one from TK Maxx at the start of the year, and it fits perfectly in the front pocket of my laptop bag.

A notebook
I know lots of people who take notes on their phone or laptop, but I’m an old fashioned kinda gal. I think things through by writing them out, so I’ll always make sure I have a notebook on me. I also believe that when you’re meeting potential clients, taking notes on your phone can look a bit ‘off’. With a notebook I think I come across as organised and focused on the work at hand.

A multi-coloured pen
Now this one might seem weird, but I promise it makes sense! I like to colour code things as it helps me think, and it’s great for ticking off to-do lists. As I try to travel light, I love using a multi-coloured pen (you know the kind with those ink tabs you can click into place? One of those) so I can have a whole pencil case in one. As much as I’d love to work with the entire Paperchase collection, carting around as little as possible is important when you’re working out and about.

Lipstick
You might have noticed I’m a fan of a bold lip. Whether I’m going for a bright colour or a clear plumping gloss, I need to have a lipstick with me at all times. I like that this Grace laptop bag channels my love of bold colours, and the coral shade matches one of my favourite liquid lipsticks perfectly. If you can’t have fun matching your lippy to your bag then when can you?!

Eyeliner
A gal’s gotta have her flicks on fleek, right? Starting out as a freelancer is a scary prospect, no doubt about it, but when I think I’m looking great my confidence in my abilities greatly increases. I’m a big fan of the Soap and Glory Supercat liquid eyeliner pen at the moment. The Grace Deluxe bag has handy slots in its front pocket for pens – luckily my eyeliner fits in perfectly!

My freelancer essentials range from the practical to the glamorous (let’s not lie, lipstick is a real essential ladies!) and it’s important that my kit reflects my style and me as a person – bold and bright, but also practical and professional.
